Ruby you are funny, I knew what you meant about poking the tablets into the apple. Ž£20 for that amount isn't that expensive. I shall speak to our vet and get myself ready for summer. Fantastic idea folks and thanks.

We never gave Piriton a thought either but our Irish draft mare had it bad, we used to hog her mane so that we could get the skin so soft closer to the root and her tail was never very good, she also used to lay on the floor and rub her stomach raw and chew her feet constantly. The vet told us to give her 20 tablets a day and she is 16.3hh and quite heavy. I used to give them to her in an apple by cutting it into quarters and then poking the apples into the flesh, 5 in each quarter. We buy them direct from the vet £20 for 500 tablets as buying them over the counter at a chemist would cost more. Give it a try and see how it work - it did for us.

Our mare is about 17.2 hh, so she would need the same as your Clydie. My goodness that is some tablets for him, did they make him dopy? Thanks for the help Ruby, I shall speak to our vet when he comes next month to do their 'flu jabs.

Ruby I would not have thought about Piriton to clear sweet itch. We have a broody mare that rubs herself raw in the summer. Mane and tail disappear and then she gets on the floor and rubs her belly with her foot until she is raw. I have tried everything from sulphur to citronella and alternative remedies and nothing works. Can you tell me how many Piriton daily should be administered and is it the Piriton that you buy over the counter.

I think that is a good decision Paul, it will make more of an impact if you display it around the day each year. You could always put some holly up for Christmas.

Hi All,

I run a number of 'Friendly' sites, they are all for animals that I have very great affection for and as such have created these sites.

It is a natural growth that the site sees, a growth of people who's interest is Shires. As with the breed becoming rare I guess the same goes for the owners. That said my first Friendly Site, www.briards.org.uk has a membership of 700 plus, and the Briard is a pretty rare breed as well. However that site has been around for many years, my second site www.beardedcollies.org.uk has half the members but is much more active.

Like this site the Beardie site had it fair share of 'Start Up' problems, however once the site goes, and people are writing and asking for advise then more and more people will join and respond.

I think this site is getting closer to getting a group of people who talk to each other and share information.

I have to be frank I am not here everyday due to work commitments, however it is always a pleasure to see people use it.

How can it get more active? By letting like minded people know, by getting into the top of the search engines and in that respect we are moving up, we are on the first page, just not near the top yet. Again this is achieved by having more and more information, i.e. posts.

I hope you will all persevere and visit the site regularly and make all the new members feel welcome.

Paul

Not sure whether they suffer more than any other breed, wouldn't have thought so. My daughter had an Irish draft X that suffered sweet itch quite bad and we used Avon skin so soft on her but more recently the vet suggested we use Piriton tablets which we bought direct from the vet as it was cheaper than getting them from the chemist. This worked wonderfully, no more scratching, rawness or anything else related with it. We also have a Shetland that suffers badly from sweet itch but the Avon remedy didn't work on her, it made it worse but the Piriton tablets have done the trick with her also. If you want to try the Avon skin so soft let me know as I have lots of bottles left and would willingly post one to you to try. Denise
