This lady is near manchester and she has worked wonders with Ruby, she is a natural horsmanship lady and is really very good. Just give her a go even if it is just a couple of times and you will notice a differance. Michelle 07786 342423. Very Happy

Hi,

It is a very sad day for me today! I am toally heartbroken and feel i am in torment. Yes my shire does have other problems as well but did not want to post everything at once as my brain is already in overload.

You see Rosie will not pick her feet up and has never done so! I have worked with her everyday trying to get them up and it is back breaking, she will pick them up but will not hold them. I got the farrier out and he could do nothing with her.

I understand everyones view on what i can do and i am so grateful, but i have spoke with my vet this morning and he has said that because of her behaviour, only having someone come in and spend money on her will only do very little in retraining her. Rosie is not of sound nature anyway as she has so many health issues, but as my vet says she is feeling much better now and is using her weight and i have no chance against this.

I feel heartbroken inside but at the end of the day i know i have done everything in my power to help her.

Thanx

I'm sorry to hear you've reached this point Lianne. Is there absolutely no chance of giving her to a permanent retirement home? I've gone through many farriers with Greggory and believe me, I know the feeling of despair when your horse's feet are falling apart and you can't get anyone to take them on. I just kept looking till I found my farrier, who was willing to work with Greggory and not 'get after' him for not standing for him. He was very patient and it's paid off big time!

I know, your case is much different with Rosie. She's a big problem for you in many other ways. Not a good match really.
A happy ending, would be to hear you've found a place for her, but if you're not able to give her to someone with experience and/or the resources, who's willing to let her live out her days in peace, I guess there's no other alternative than to have her put down. Very sad.

I had the same problem with Ruby's feet honest I did. Just give Michelle a go first. I understand how you are feeling just give her one last chance. U might only need to have Michelle out every other week. Just give her a go and you will see a differance after the first time. Chin up and please try Sad

Hi,

Thanks for your posts.

Well i have spoken with my vet today and as he says Rosie has lots of behavioural problems from her past, she is no youngster and so will only benefit slightly with help from another person. It's not like having a filly where you can do lots of work with.

I know in my heart that i have tried with Rosie, spent nearly £2,000 in vet bills of which treatment is still on-going. I believed that yes you can work with a sound horse, however please understand she is not. She does feel okay in herself as the bute is masking over the problem but she still drags the hindleg everyday. When Rosie wants to go though she will, and i am only little and 5ft 4ins.

I can say that she has never been long reined and when we tried it, this turned out to be just the same.

You know not only does Rosie not like having the bridle on, she has never had her feet picked up! From the word go of getting her she would not let you pick them up, it is only now that after doing it twice a day will she slightly lift them but my god she is quick to put them down. We have had the farrier out but no luck. Actually her feet aren't to bad considering but it is another obstacle i have with her.

I hope i haven't offended anyone on her, as it is not my intention only to try and fully explain what we have both been through. As my vet has told me not many people would of done for her as what we have but there comes a point when enough is enough, she has so many problems and considering her age it will only get worse, the conditions she has will never get better.

I hope you all understand but my decision is to have Rosie Put to sleep, all i ask is that no-one tries to judge me on this forum site. It is a haeartbreaking decision that i have had to make but i have tried all options.

I have cried so many tears, i just wish the ground would swallow me up. I feel that in a way i am the selfish one but when owning a horse and it becomes dangerous at times it is not in the place where i want to be.

Thanx

Lianne xxx

For what it's worth, I think you are definitely doing the right thing. I had my lovely mare PTS recently. She had many health problems and it was the only thing to do. In Rosie's case, you have tried everything and more. I don't think there are many people that would have spent so much money and gone through so many emotions. Who is to say that her behaviour isn't pain related? You have made a hard decision, but a brave one.

Sorry you've had to make such an hard decision, if you know you tried your best that's all that counts.

The more information you give about Rosie the more it sounds as if her behaviour problems were probably pain related.

I fully support you in this and think you have been very caring and patient, and your last act for her is still an act of kindness passing her on to someone else may not do her any favours and will not end her suffering and who knows where she may end up.

Hi,

Thank you so much for all your heart felt words at this awful time.

You know please understand that this isn't a decision i have suddenly come across, i have tried every angle in trying to get her in a rescue centre but no-one will take her. I have even seen adverts for novices who are specifically looking for a shire horse, i do not think they know how powerful a shire actually is! I could not give her to anyone else as i know that i have treated her in the best way ever, she has got everything from ten rugs etc to hand made fancy bridles made by a jockey for her. My husband says she gets everything and he gets nothing! I know that i am heartbroken inside but i have done all i can, she is never going to get better and when i spoke with my vet yesterday he mentioned that some of her behaviour problems could have to do with why she was left in a field for eight years.

I do not know how i will get through this, i am in tears posting this. I would just like to let you know that Rosie is going to be put to sleep at 9.30am this friday morning Sad .

Please understand it is not a decision that i am not willing to try any other methods because she is not of sound health, Rosie will never get better and i have had to weigh up all the pros and cons and it is the hardest decision of my life.

From the bottom of my heart i would like to thank you all for your support.

Take care and thank you

I hope it all goes well and you are doing a very brave thing for both of your health and happiness. You are evidently a lot tougher than you're giving yourself credit for xxxx

My heart goes out to you Lianne, I think you are being extremely brave {hugs} I'm involved in dog rescue and there is no doubt that some animals are so damaged, either through nature or nuture, that they cannot ever be 'fixed' no matter how much we love them. Allowing her to go with dignity surrounded by love requires a huge amount of courage and it is the last act of kindness you can show Rosie, so I truly believe you are doing the right thing for her; be strong for her sake, I suspect that others in her past should have reached this conclusion before you, but ducked the issue.

Thinking of you and Rosie, take care and please don't be too hard on yourself xxx

Lianne, you are doing what is best for Rosie, as we all can see that is what you have always done for her, your best. She knows that.
The worst decision anyone will ever have to make but it is our duty to know when the time is right for our friends.
She may not have had the best life until she met you, but she will go knowing she is loved.
I am so sorry. You have all our support and we will all be thinking of you both.

Lianne I am so sorry to read your sad news. I too think you are doing the kindest thing for your girl. It is horrible for you and your family. I wish you happy memories of your times with your girl and hope the help with this sad time.

Do stay on the site as there are a lot of very nice people here who would hate to see you go. I no longer have a shire but enjoy reading everyones adventures good and bad. Hopefully in time you will give a wonderful home to another horse.

Caitriona xx

You have done your very best for Rosie. Please do not be too hard on yourself - it is a very difficult situation to be in, and making that decision requires so much bravery. You have weighed up the situation, and we all know you wouldn't have been thinking of anything else but this.

My heart goes out to you - I really do know how you feel having lost my old shire in November last year - it is a difficult decision, and not one that anyone should have to make

Please don't beat yourself up, although I know you will - it will get easier in time - and the decision will eventually rest easy with you - you have done all you can!!!!!!!!!

Heartbroken, i feel that someone has ripped my heart out!

I cannot express the grief and saddness i feel, i love you Rosie and there will never be a minute when i will not be thinking of you. I have had the best 9 months with you ever and would not change that for the world.

I have to say that when i had to say goodbye to you i did not think i had enough strength inside to get me by, i hope Rosie that you really understood that this was for the best as i did not want you to suffer. You know if only i could have had you from day one i would have, if only things could have been different. I just want to hug you one last time, and smother you in kisses like we use to do every night.

I know that i have to be strong, but the fact i won't see her again is gut wrenching. My husband Tony is a broken man which is hard to see, he loved her so much xxxxxxxx.

I have a cutting of Rosie's tail which i will treasure forever and keep ever so close to my heart.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the people that have posted to me and Rosie and my husband Tony. If i could come and give you all a big hug and a personal thank you i would, i do not think i could of got through this without all you.

Thank you so much

All my love always

Lianne

I really feel for you,we had our Rose PTS last year. but one thing I regret is not taking a cutting from her mane and tail. I think I would have used the attached if I had. big hugs all round.

Rosie is now free from pain and suffering, and you and your family have been strong people, and so brave to make that decision.

The tears will now fall - don't fight the grief. She knows you loved her, and she will be running free now.

Glad you have a tail cutting - I too have that, and Kizzy's forlock - I had some jewellery made which had some of her ashes and tail inside - feel free to take a look under "gone but never forgotten" - Kizzy was her name

You have wonderful memories of Rosie - treasure them

Take care

Oh Lianne, I am so sorry for you and am shedding tears for you and Tony today. We had to make the same awful decision almost a year ago to have our baby shire, Ruby, PTS (she's the shire on the left in my avatar). We are still raw from it and I have found your thread so difficult to read. Ruby was only 2 1/2 years old, a baby, and she should have had her whole life ahead of her. Other than her funny walk caused by a spine deformity which she grew into (and was the reason she had to leave us), it was as if she was a perfectly healthy shire. So that made the final decision to have her PTS so difficult. There was always that "what if there's a way that she can get better" question at the back of our minds, especially when we went down to London to visit her one last time at the hospital, and she was her usual happy, cheeky self, scoffing all the apples and mints we could feed her! It was hard to believe there was anything wrong with her and that was the hardest part of all - I was beside myself with guilt and grief. We knew, because the experts had told us, that there was nothing more that could be done for her and the last thing we wanted was to bring her home again and find her one day collapsed in the field.

Keeping a clipping of hair is a lovely way to remember the happy times. I will keep Ruby's hair forever, as I'm sure you will keep Rosie's.

If you have some photographs of Rosie, it would be really nice if you would post them in the "Gone but not forgotten" section of this forum - when you are ready - it would be a lovely tribute to your girl.

Big hugs coming your way. We had to put our boy on the home page PTS due to grass sickness. The second worse day of my life. Be strong.

Thank you x

I would just like to post to you all, as it is my second day without my ever loving shire Rosie ( i love you Rosie Roo xx ).

Please give me some time and then i am going to post some pictures of Rosie, i would love for you all to see her, this would mean so much to me.

When i was riding we was always in black and pink, my hand made bridle was black and the nose and browband had an inlay of pastol pink suede, only the best for her ( i will treasure that forever). Even my numnah was pink, my hat was pink, So last night i have i have put pink ribbon through her tail and put it in a lovely box.

It might take me a week or two to get my pictures together but i will post them.

I thank you all for your support

Lianne & Tony
