Fun subject
I was just wondering how other owners deal with this. I have been told, it's not a good idea to clean them too often as it can interfere with their natural oils.
Anyone have any problems, tips or opinions about cleaning horses' sheaths?
I was grooming Greggory this morning, loose in the round pen, when he 'dropped'. I got the bottle of Excalibur, sprayed it on and started to clean him while he was still loose, munching his hay.
He let me clean it and didn't do anything 'studdy', then relaxed and continued eating his hay like it had all been a dream
I can just imagine what the neighbours are thinking |

Well, I just found the thread you're talking about and it was quite an eyefull!
Ratface's posts are epic. Very cheeky but too funny.
I suppose it's hard to be serious with such a touchy subject
I think you should point all newbies in the direction of that thread to initiate them and let them see what you're all made of! Same as most of us,it seems
OT- Hiya Angela! me sister lives in Wigan and I was born in Westhoughton! xxx very homesick now
Where can I see pics of you riding your shire? Looks gorgeous! |

I tickle a specific spot on Jack's belly, he flops his member out and thoroughly enjoys it, so much so that because he has a very (look away now if you are squeamish) large wrinkly sheath, he starts to sway his hindquarters with pleasure whilst I *ahem* explore and he has been known to nuzzle my clothing in a rather amorous way! I don't use any cleaner, but he does get a quick squirt of baby oil in there beforehand to loosen anything
There's nothing worse than a gelding who smells, squeaks when he walks or one who reveals crusty clingons when he pees, especially at shows |

Absolutely breathtaking! Going off topic I guess, but where are you with his training now? Any recent pics of him working? |

Thank you I think he is the most handsome chap in the world!
Slightly O/T but we have been long reining in harness and doing lots of ground work for a couple of months while I get more experience driving/grooming/backstepping for others (mainly shetlands/welsh A/B s NF ponies, cos that's what my friends drive!) Have finally found a breaking cart big enough, which I am borrowing for a couple of months (thanks Stella, you are a star ) from next week, so will probably get Pippa Bassett over to do the business; I'm not sure that I could send him to her, lovely as she is, and only just up the road, but I'd miss him too much, as would Milo, his homeboy and field buddy!

Sounds exciting! Good luck with the cart training. It sounds like you've laid a good foundation and hopefully it will be uneventful, when you hitch him up the first time. I look forward to seeing that! Never send them away, unless you 'have' to!
Hey Angela, how big is Wobs? He kinda reminds me of Greggory and looks about the same size, 17hh? You look really good on him anyway. I hope to have some pics of me riding Greggory soon.
I used to go to Eckersley's Farm on Wigan Rd in W,houghton. Know it? We're talking, 40 years ago It's probably a shopping center now! |

Williams 'cling ons' sit pretty hard.. I was tempted to 'scrape 'em off....but dont think thats maybe a good idea
C.J...Do you mean that baby oil softens them up first....?? (a little like WD40 on a rusty bolt)...so that they are easier to wash of afterwards...? |

Interesting analogy Nick, but it seems to work, once they have been 'lubed' much less peeling is required, especially in the folds!!!! Really not a subject for sunday brekkie time |

- definitely not a thread to be read over the cornflakes!!!
I can certainly back up Ratface's observations on Fergus's dinkle - stinky it is!! I delegate the task of cleaning it to Mr O. Fergus doesn't mind having it cleaned. George never complains either - in fact he is very willing to cooperate!
We found some cleaning stuff at the saddlery which is a bit like a gel that you squirt on and massage in - I suppose it has the same effect as baby oil and softens. It is imaginatively called "Sheath Cleaner". I'm sure it just KY Jelly with a name change and a price increase!! (Not that I am an expert on KY Jelly you understand!).
Anyway, I was chatting an old older shire man a couple of days ago - and we got to discussing sheaths, as you do, and he said that years ago old-fashioned horsemen would NEVER clean a horse's sheath, because they reckoned that once you started you could never stop - if you know what I mean! |

It'll be interesting to see if he does grow an inch or so more. I think they can keep growing after 5, though it could be they just look bigger when mature
Sorry for going O/T guys. Carry on sheath cleaning! |

Williams doesnt stink yet...and i think its more 'digestable'...(hahahaha... ) if one can use insect repellant around the area atleast... (but i know that doesnt help with the dust)....haha.. (I just came in from church lol )
A bag of pork scratchins just came to mind... |

Been humming the tune all day! Before anyone thinks I'm weird, it was shamelessly pinched from another forum I visit, I didn't go searching youtube for it! |
