Hi Everyone,
Coster was extremely unwell when I got to him yesterday morning and has been in surgery overnight. He has tied his small intestine in a knot.
4ft of intestine later and in recovery he did stand up. Will hear more this morning but the Vets were concerned that he could have an internal bleed if he does not manage to clot well himself and then we have to face the issue of starting his gut up again, fingers crossed if these issues work out well we will have our boy back.
Has anyone else been through anything like this before?
He has been such a brave boy!
Thanks for reading
Lisa

Thank you so much for all your kind words.
I went to visit Coster yesterday and he pricked up his ears and wondered over and was so pleased to see us. I cant explain how it felt to hug him he to understand who we are. The night before when he was admitted to hospital he did not know where he was or anything it just was not Coster. Which I am grateful for in a way as he would not have known hopefully what was going on. Seeing him yesterday was horrific he was bleeding from his stomach onto the floow which apparently is perfectly normal. One you can be strong and look passed that everything was normal he was pleased to see us and we were so pleased to see him. He is not out of the woods yet, he has developed Ileus which is common post op and its completely up to him now. Sometimes they kick start themselves suddenly and get back to normal or they deteriorate. The Vet said that if he deteriorates then they can go back inside and have a look at him however, my partner and I have decided that we would not want that for him. He has been through an operation once we cant put him through it again.
The other thing we have to face is cost but we are not even worrying about that right now. The Insurance covers him for 3k like most insurance does but the operation etc will be around the mark of 10k.
So I dont know what we will do whether we can pay the hospital monthly or something but I cant think about ti right now.

Thank you for coming back and letting us know what is happening. We are all rooting for him.
He is a lucky horse to have such a caring owner stand by him through this, and make the best choices.
He was pleased to be with you when he knew you were there.
Well it is in the hands of Fate now, and Coster's own ability to recover.
Still sending my best thoughts and vibes. Courage.

Thanks everyone, I now have an update.
Today the tube was inserted through his nose again twice and he did not have any fluid so looks like he has stopped refluxing! Which is great news, he went for a wonder today with me and was allowed a tiny amount of grass and then had a Bran mash. He has started passing some stools every now and then which is good and his stomach is making a racket!
He keeps trying to neigh when I arrive and lets the vets know that I am there ha ha
He had a nose bleed today which was quite horrid and he wiped it all over me but I dont care. When I arrived I found him dragging the vets around his stable and he also tried to boot them when they were taking his temp so his sprit is back.
Only downside is that he has developed a Thrombolism if thats how you spell it where his Catheter was fitted. So he has to be taken off his drip and given aspirin. This will be hist first night without the drip so I am praying he will be ok.
He really has been a fighter through all this and I hope he has enough fight to get through it, still early days.
Its amazing really, they were all trying to get his head down for the tube today and then I arrived and there you go he lowered his head for me and let them do it.
Everyone keeps saying he loves me to much to leave me and I am hoping and starting to think they are right. Will let you know more when I do xx

OMG I feel for you and your boy. Its horrendous that you have to cope with the horse being unwell and that HUGE bill. Its clear I should have done better in school and become a vet. Its clearly a licence to print money. What was the hospital called Dick Turpins hospital for highway robbery!!!!! Hope he is on the mend soon and try and keep positive xxxx

Delighted that he is doing what he is supposed to be doing. Long may it last. Sending white light to you both. It is very stressful.

Regards,

Caitriona xx

Hi Everyone, a new update....
Coster is doing very very well, he is no longer on any medication and is merely staying at the hospital a little longer so that they can keep an eye on him. If he continues to progress like this he can come home this weekend.
What a fighter and Brave boy he has been.
I am so so pleased.
Does anyone know where I can get hold of some stable mats as soon a possible? I need them for when he comes home.
To be honest I would rather not spend a fortune as need to pay his vets bill and second hand would do. I just dont want him laying down with his wound and any cold coming up through the floor.
Thanks peeps, will update again soon
xxxx

Just reading through this old post again, it really took me back and I am crying my eyes out!
I cannot believe that my precious precious baby, is out in his summer field right now, flicking his tale up eating grass with his buddies and having his silly bronks around the field.
I am so so so lucky, Coster I love you with every part of me Smile Smile thank you for surviving Smile
